Schizophrenia Can Look Like Different Disorders

"The inability to feel joy, the inability to feel for another human being, those broke my heart even more than the psychosis."

Randye

Transcript

My son started going to psychiatrist after psychiatrist and they all had different opinions and they all had different relationships with him. We went through a few therapists as well. I started educating myself, and that was a real turning point for me. As I started reading the list of symptoms, the inability to plan and carry out a constructive day, that’s a negative symptom. A disinterest in school, it’s a negative symptom. Isolating yourself from friends, negative symptom.

And I started adding up all the pieces of what I’d seen-- he couldn’t do teamwork on the wilderness trip, he stopped being interested in teams in high school, he narrowed down to one girlfriend and then even that fell apart. So I started to see, the inability to feel joy, the inability to feel for another human being, those broke my heart even more than the psychosis that you see and this kind of weird behaviors and, he would withdraw into what I now believe is a much more interesting internal world.
