In the Workplace: A Goal for Employers

"A mental illness is the same thing as any other illness that affects any other body part."

Transcript

I’d love to see every workplace be able to recognize that a mental illness is the same thing as any other illness that affects any other body part. People will have cancer and they feel comfortable going to their boss saying I need to go and get chemo treatment, yet if someone is suffering from depression then they can’t—they’re too afraid to approach their boss because they’re afraid that they’ll be passed over for a promotion or something, and it’s not fair. It should be treated equally.

But I think the biggest obstacle is the stigma. We need to overcome the fact that an illness in the brain is the same as an illness in any other body part. We have a long way to go. I think we’ve made a lot of strides in talking openly about mental illness, but the workplace is probably one of the last areas.
