Being a Parent With Depression

"For me, I think it would have been helpful to know that it ran in the family."

Janet

Transcript

My son is seven. I think he notices that I get sad sometimes. I don’t know if he knows what that means; sometimes he’ll pat me on the shoulder and tell me it will be okay.

I think it would have been helpful to know that it ran in the family. It wasn’t talked about much in the family, in my mom’s family, until after my mom passed away. And then different people, different family members came to us and said, "Yeah this runs in the family."

It’s hard to tell when I’ll actually talk to my son about the word depression. I think that he notices more every day, and I think there will probably be a point when he asks me why I’m sad. That’s probably when it will come up.
