Write it Down

"My dad said, 'You know, let’s get a little notebook and on every day you’re just going to write the date, you’re going to write what medications you took, how you’re feeling, and any side effects."

When I first got sick, the way we tracked my symptoms was a mood chart. It’s a piece of paper, I mean, totally old school, but you track your medication, you track any side effects and you track your mood on the level of one to ten. Over the month you can see your patterns, and so I would take that with me to my doctor’s appointments. That was actually something my dad recommended when I first got sick. We were struggling with all the information from the doctors and the different medications and my dad said, "You know, let’s get a little notebook and on every day you’re just going to write the date, you’re going to write what medications you took, how you’re feeling, and any side effects. That has enabled us to really track and that was the beginning of how I started writing. Because I started tracking that day to day, and then eventually I started really delving into my story.
